Government shareholding is represented by a line item of the number of shares and % of equity on behalf of the President of India. It must be a constitutional quirk
The Government owns roughly 70% of the shareholders equity in Indian Banks. Good news when asset prices increase. Bad news when loans go south and prices decrease. Worse news when more capital is required from shareholders or other sources to keep the lights on.
The President of India owns 65 % of PNB and Dena Bank who are fessing up to bad loans that the market has sensed for some time. Insurance companies (also government owned) have 15%. Mutual Funds/UTI (also some government ownership) in for about 5%. And roughly half a million lucky shareholders have over one lac in shareholding each.
Foreign Investors are notably absent with the expception of Acacia Funds whose LP's must be thrilled
